Case Study: Transforming Data Connectivity with Factorian 

Executive Summary 

Ocyon’s manufacturing organization faced significant challenges in synchronizing data across a fragmented landscape of legacy serial devices, standalone analytical instruments, and SCADA-controlled systems. By implementing Factorian as a centralized middleware and process historian solution, the company established a “central nervous system” for its data, enabling real-time integration, long-term archival, and advanced AI analytics. 

The Challenge: A Fragmented Data Landscape 

The customer operated in a complex environment where critical data was trapped in silos across three distinct categories of equipment: 

  • Serial Sources: Devices like pH meters and weigh balances using RS232 protocols. 
  • Standalone Instruments: High-end analytical tools (HPLCs, Spectrophotometers) that generated data primarily in static PDF formats. 
  • Automated Systems: SCADA-controlled machinery, including Fermenters, Chromatography systems, and filling lines. 

Without a unified way to collect this data, the organization struggled with choices to make between manual error prone data entry or utilizing fragmented vendor provided machine wise platforms for data connectivity to feed live data to MES or LIMS systems, and also were lacking a historical data archive of machine data for long-term trend analysis. 

The Solution: Factorian as the Central Nervous System 

The organization deployed Factorian as a middleware data providing layer to bridge the gap between the shop floor machines and lab instruments and enterprise systems like MES, LIMS or inhouse Agentic-AI platforms. 

Key Implementation Highlights: 

  • Universal Data Collection: Factorian seamlessly ingested data from diverse sources, ranging from serial RS232/RS485 devices to complex OPC based SCADA outputs to parsed PDF result files from analytical instruments. 
  • Real-Time Data Flow: Information was no longer static; it flowed instantly to execution systems like LIMS (Laboratory Information Management System) and MES (Manufacturing Execution System). 
  • Advanced Archival: All incoming data was stored in a high-performance time-series archive, providing a rich foundation for AI-driven analytics.

By centralizing their data infrastructure through Factorian, the customer achieved: 

  1. Operational Efficiency: Eliminated manual data silos, ensuring that LIMS and MES had the most current data for production execution.
